Learning the Ropes

The only option for coffee in this apartment is a French Press. So I studied YouTube to learn the best way to make coffee and clean the press. The first batch was a little strong so I made a latte. Breakfast was some lovely fresh fruit and yogurt.

The others in the apartment awoke slowly. Joe and Carrie chose to sleep. So Jay and I went walking, he with his golf bag. He was aiming for a tee time at the New Course. The New Course is strictly walk up and play after 9:30 AM.

One of the unique sights in St. Andrews is folks walking to the course carrying their bag. This was the third group I had seen in 15 minutes.

Jay and I stopped at the Old Course Pavilion. I learned how to use the tablet to register for the day before ballot for The Old Course. Jay had registered Monday and was #12 on the waiting list. He asked the starter about his chances of getting on The Old Course today. Not good was the response. So we walked to the Links Clubhouse past the Himalayas. The Himalayas is the Ladies Putting Course. So I took a picture of the times the public is able to play.

The Himalayas

While I perused the golf shop, Jay was able to get a tee time for 11:05. It would be over an hour until the tee time so off to the pub. Cappuccino for me and juice for Jay overlooking the first tee and 18th green of the New Course. We finished our beverages and Jay headed to putt. I headed for the shops…

I walked through three. Nothing of particular note. Lots of beautiful things. But I don’t need more “things.”

I came to the apartment and rounded up Carrie and Joe. The group decided to see if we could lunch at Little Italy. It is probably Joe’s and my favorite restaurant in St. Andrews. Reservations are only available by phone or in person. The restaurant is now one of Jay and Carrie’s too, as they dined there before Joe and I arrived. On the way we stopped at H&M to shop for sunglasses. I broke the only pair I brought. And Joe forgot his. I had success for only five pounds. Slightly more than the H&M sunglasses I purchased in Vietnam last year for about $2. Joe found a more expensive pair at Boots down the street. And then off to locate Little Italy. Found it! It was 2:00 and there was a table for three! Yay.

Lunch was wonderful.

I had lasagna. I couldn’t eat it all.
Joe had fried mozzarella
Carrie had pumpkin ravioli

We finished lunch (and a few glasses of delicious Montepulciano wine) and Jay was texting. So we met part way at Greyfriars for a pint. Then the email came:

Wow!

Success in the ballot. Joe and I will play The Old Course on Thursday at 12:30! And then more excitement an hour later:

I will play The Old Course Wednesday by myself.

I hope I drive it well on the first tee. At that time of day there will probably be a “gallery.” Here’s to “hitting it straight.” The weather forecast is mostly cloudy with a high of 69*F. Wind is expected 5 to 10 mph. Sounds like ideal weather for golf. Fore!

  2. My husband would be so jealous. We were there a couple of years ago on a cruise and walked part of the course but he didn’t get to play.
