The rain continued. Koper is a lovely town. Joe and I were here in 2021 as the world was emerging from COVID. That visit we walked the town.
This visit I opted for visiting the capital Ljubljana and Lake Bled. But that was not to be. There were traffic issues the previous day that resulted in the tour returning three hours late. It seems there is a German/Austrian holiday this week and half of each country chooses Croatia for said holiday. The roads were overwhelmed the day before our tour. The tour operator offered an alternative. And it proved to be a gem.
Joe and I opted to go to Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle. Best of all everyone else in the group opted to cancel, so it was a private tour!

There is a trail through the cave. The temperature inside is a constant ten degrees Celsius. Since it was another rainy day I had a jacket but not slacks so it was chilly inside. But the “march” through the cave kept me warm enough.

From the castle’s website:
A mere few kilometres from Postojna Cave, the Karst world offers an unforgettable experience in the fairytale world of knights. The impregnable medieval marvel has been perched in the middle of a 123-metre-high cliff for more than 800 years. Behind the largest cave castle in the world, there is a network of secret tunnels, from where the knight Erazem of Predjama would set out on his plundering expeditions. The Cave under Predjama Castle is the home of a colony of bats.
But since we had just walked quite a bit in the cave, we opted for the view.

And then the tour became really interesting. Since this was now a “private” tour our guide took us to the privately owned castle of an acquaintance. We were treated to a great view, local hospitality and wonderful local wine.

We returned to the ship after a wonderful day with Ernie. I have his contact information if you ever get to Koper and are seeking a tour guide. Or, he would like to coach ski jumping. So I can pass on his info if you are in the market for a ski jumping coach.
