Muscat, Oman

Thus begins the wearing of modest clothes for women (and sometimes men)…

The picture from our stateroom balcony. The Sultan’s two yachts.

We opted for our favorite, the HOHO bus. It was HOT! We just toured Muscat and didn’t disembark the bus.

Muttrah Fort (قلعة مطرح) is a historic fort in wilayat Muttrah in Governate of Muscat. The fort sits on a dominating position on the hills of Al Hajar mountains overlooking the natural harbor of Muttrah “The Sultan Qaboos Port”, which would have made it quite an impregnable position to defend Muttrah from attacks while also allowing observation of the surrounding territory from its watchtowers.

Al Alam Palace. The President’s Palace. It is palatial.

Muscat’s new Parliament Building was designed to be the city’s newest iconic landmark and a fitting seat for the national government. Home to both houses of the Majlis ash Shura – Oman’s parliament – as well as the state council.
A lookout tower called Mabkhara in Arabic, symbolizing Oman’s generated wealth from crude oil decades ago.
Mutrah Suq. One of the oldest markets in Oman, dating back about two hundred years.

I purchased a lovely silk “tent” dress in India for not much but it didn’t quite fit. Not to worry. There were tailors in the suq ( mostly makers of abayas). So I asked one to alter the dress for me. He did. For $2!
