Tauranga

The largest port by volume and next to a lovely beach town where we docked.

The cruise ships from the motorway

But it was the jumping off point for a wonderful adventure. A tour of Hobbiton, the movie set turned tourist attraction in the middle of nowhere.

But what an adventure to see The Shire and Hobbit Holes built by into the hills of Mr. Alexander’s 1250 acre sheep and beef farm.

Carol was my “date.” Joe wasn’t up for the trek.
The one oak tree at the top center is artificial
The detail of the Hobbit Holes is extraordinary
The Cheesemaker’s Hole

Two Holes were finished just over a year ago into which visitors can venture.

The children’s bedroom
The parent’s bedroom. Thanks to Bob and Karrie for being the models!

One wall of the pantry
The cookbook in the kitchen
The Mill
Gandalf in the souvenir shop

Definitely a must do when in the area. Be sure to book ahead as I heard the attraction does not cater to ship excursions. Oh and did I say they do weddings?

Next up, Napier.
