A wonderful talk yesterday by Jacqui Christian. Jacqui is a seventh generation descendant of Fletcher Christian, First Officer of HMS Bounty. Jacqui is using Onward to get home to Pitcairn Island, the next scheduled stop. Current population of Pitcairn is less than 100. The school is closed. Teenagers must leave the island to further their education and only 25% return. Supplies come to the island via supply ship from New Zealand four times per year. Residents grow much of their food and catch fish for protein. It is a British Overseas Territory.
Most residents have three to four jobs to keep the island going. The EU provided funds for paving roads before Brexit. But there is not sufficient able-bodied labor to get the work done. Jacqui and her family recently spent six months on the island building a new home for one resident and renovating her parent’s former home as a place for immigrants to stay.
Pitcairn is seeking able-bodied immigrants with skills that would benefit the islanders. Here’s more information:
Friday was the usual bridge lesson and games. Late afternoon we took advantage of one of our suite benefits. Elro our butler brought hors d’oeuvre and we hosted some new friends who wanted to see a suite.
Dinner was hosted for the World Cruise passengers on Deck 5. An Azamara first. It was a beautiful evening. Bedtime and an additional hour of sleep as the clocks change for the third night in a row.
