Harstad, Norway

Port 7 of 11 on the Azamara Norway Intensive Cruise

Harstad is the culture capital of north Norway. With its population of 23,000, it is situated on the largest island in Norway, Hinnøya, in one of the most beautiful coastal areas with skerries and Islands.

Today’s excursion is The Adolf Gun. The world’s largest land-based gun, built by the German military power during WW II. The batteries at Trondenes were built in 1943 by the German occupiers. The Adolf Gun stands today as the only completely restored fortification in the world and thus has great historical value.

The Adolf Gun is located on military property. The tour group was accompanied by two Norwegian soldiers. The gun is the largest remaining of the land based naval guns placed at the coastal forts that made up the Atlantic Wall. The calibre of the cannon’s barrel is 40.6 cm, and the cannon’s range is 56 km. Our tour guide was a retired Norwegian artillery officer.

The AzAmazing Evening punctuated the day. Those passengers who chose to attend were transported to Harstad Kulterhus for a concert by the renowned Bel Chorus. The local choir was established in 2000 and has five international competitions and two national championships.

A fabulous concert
