Olden, Norway (actually Loen)

The sail in from the North Sea through Nordfjord was beautiful. The first of many fjords on this cruise

The itinerary says Olden, but Journey dropped anchor in Loen, a few miles away. There were two other ships in Olden—Celebrity Edge and Silver Moon(?). Loen’s claim to fame is the Loen Skylift. It is one of the steepest cable cars in the world.

A ship’s excursion was the order of the day. The transportation was a coach. Not my favorite but this cruise came with a substantial amount of Onboard credit. So best to use that and take the ship’s excursions. So off we traveled to Fjaerland and the Norwegian Glacier Center. Travel was 90 minutes and included the 4-mile-long Fjaerland Tunnel.

A stop along the way. It’s a cafe with a small gift shop. Joe bought socks.
The inset shows the Location relative to northern Europe. And the larger map shows Fjaerland and Olden (at the top)

The museum was very informative beginning with a movie about the glacier with spectacular drone footage. Then a walk through the museum. Outside were replica wooly mammoths.

Time to pause and refresh with a cup of hot chocolate, even though the temperature is in the low 60’s.
A buffet lunch was served here. Too much food!
A lovely old church.
Many Norwegian buildings, particularly barns and outbuildings, are painted red due to the historical availability and affordability of red ochre-based paint, derived from copper mining byproducts. This paint, mixed with linseed oil, provided a durable and weather-resistant coating for wooden structures.

Dinner was a small caesar salad for Marianne and some fish for Joe in Windows Cafe. Early to bed for the first round of golf tomorrow.
