Cairns

The itinerary is a day and a half in Cairns. The first afternoon was exploration of the main shopping area and to find the check-in location for tomorrow’s trip to The Great Barrier Reef.

Cairns experienced tropical weather the two days we were there. It reminded me of summertime in south Florida with periodic rain showers followed by the sun.

I wandered the business district with ship friends checking the souvenir shops, the local art gallery(it had air conditioning!) and I had my legs waxed.

But the hidden gem was the Night Market. A shopping area of stalls that doesn’t open until 4:30 in the afternoon. Stalls with opals, hats and sandals, among other items. Also AU$25 massages. I regret not taking advantage of that. But a couple of ship friends did. One stall had fish pedicures. Fun to watch, but not for me.

The second day Joe and I along with eight others from Onward checked in for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. The crew on the boat were wonderful and I had a marvelous time snorkeling.

Several rainstorms blew through and the water was choppy all day.
A barracuda and a grouper going for the chum from the boat

Definitely a bucket list item and I can recommend Cairns Premier reef and Island tours for those who travel to Queensland.

Sea day tomorrow.
